Caprese salad ((イタリア語:Insalata Caprese) (:insaˈlaːta kaˈpreːze), meaning "Salad of Capri") is a simple Italian salad, made of sliced fresh mozzarella, tomatoes and basil, seasoned with salt, and olive oil.〔''The Joy of Cooking'' (75th Anniversary Edition) p. 169〕〔("Nigel Slater's classic insalata caprese recipe" ), ''The Observer'', Sunday 18 July 2010.〕 It was made to resemble the colors of the Italian flag: red, white, and green. In Italy, it is usually served as an ''antipasto'' (starter), not a ''contorno'' (side dish) unlike most salads. ==Variants== Some variations include adding chopped garlic, parsley, and various sauces (Balsamic vinegar, Italian dressing, etc.), on a bed of cos/Romaine lettuce or adding other Italian ingredients like olives.
